It's the 29th Annual Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge where thousands of people come from all over the pacific northwest to be part of this annual tradition! Some participants come from as far away as Germany, Tokyo, Chicago, Detroit and British Columbia to plunge in to the bay's chilly water.
Location: Waterfront by the Birch Bay Chamber Visitor Information Center, 7900 Birch Bay Drive, Blaine, WA 98230 - I-5 Exit 270, (head west approx.4 miles)
Registration: 9:30 AM
Costume Judging: 11:30 AM

How to get to the PLUNGE
There is no cost to take the plunge, but people who register receive "I Took The Plunge" certificate and hot beverages. "I Took The Plunge" commemorative T-shirts are available for purchase for $15/each (while supplies last).

Participant's range from children to senior adults. There are five costume judging categories with prizes for:
- Most Years Plunging
- Oldest Participant
- Best Individual Costume
- Best Group Costume
- Farthest Traveled Participant
(No awards are given for length of time in the water)
A little history
Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge started in 1982 by local residents on a dare, this annual ritual draws hundreds of participants and onlookers each year. The Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge is becoming a destination spot for the holiday season. Festivities begin New Years Eve with the Annual Ring of Fire & Hope at 7pm. This event signifies hope for the coming year. Watch as the rim of the bay comes alive with the glow of flares and candles.
